As the street sign says, Atherton is in Wigan which was a North West in Bloom finalist in 2006 and 2007. Lovely.
Easily accessible on the train and bus from Manchester it is easy to reach Atherton Collieries from across the north west.
The journey from Manchester to Atherton may sound like a daunting one… but as long as you get on the right train or bus then you’ll arrive in our lovely town in no time. From Manchester Victoria, catch a train to Southport, Wigan or Kirkby (ensuring that the service is via Walkden or Atherton) and you will be fine!
From Manchester Piccadilly, either walk to Manchester Victoria, or alternatively catch a train to Salford Crescent and change there for one of the Southport, Wigan or Kirkby trains via Atherton.
However, we would recommend catching the brand new guided bus system from Manchester if you do find yourself arriving into Manchester Piccadilly.
From April 2016 onwards, Atherton has been served by the brand new multi-million pound Guided Busway project. This is IDEAL for midweek matches at Alder House, as the bus stop is just moments from Alder House and drops you off in the city centre, close to Albert Square and St Peters Square.
Simply catch the V2 bus, which says Atherton on the front from the city centre. It announces the names of the stops (a bit like down in that London) meaning you will find it very hard to miss your stop. The services are extremely frequent and run until around 23:30. A day ticket will cost you £4.20 (First Greater Manchester Day Ticket). It only stops at limited places, meaning the journey – once you escape Manchester – is pretty plain sailing.
