In the early hours of Tuesday 2nd June, Atherton Collieries welcomed ‘March of the Day 3’ to the Dreams 2 Reality Stadium, a charity walk of 350+ miles between almost 50 football grounds, raising funds for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation and Leeds Hospital Charities.
The Darby-Rimmer Foundation was founded by former Bolton, Bradford and Liverpool defender Stephen Darby and former RAF Serviceman Chris Rimmer following their diagnoses with motor neurone disease in 2018 and 2014 respectively. Chris Rimmer sadly passed away in April 2022. The foundation raises funds for support, awareness and research of motor neurone disease.
A party of over 30 walkers stopped off at the Colls at approximately 2am, as part of a larger walking route between Liverpool’s Anfield and Stockport County’s Edgeley Park, with the final destination of the week-long campaign due to be Leeds United. John McGinlay and Jay Spearing, both of Bolton Wanderers fame, were amongst the cohort.
We would like to thank club volunteers Carl McGuire and Kevin Blake for ensuring a warm welcome to our club for those walking the overnight section for this important cause, with the club proud to play our part on the route for a second year.
So far, the campaign has incredibly raised over £71,000 plus gift-aid, with a target of £200,000.
We would like to extend the best of luck to all from March of the Day, the Darby Rimmer Foundation and the Leeds Hospital Charities as their walk continues over the coming days. Please visit their fundraising sites and social media pages to stay updated and find out more.
