News: Michael Clegg agrees new deal

Atherton Collieries are proud to announce that manager Michael Clegg has reaffirmed his commitment to the club, and is set to sign a new two year deal to remain at the Kensite Stadium, Alder Street. Cleggy has lead the club and our supporters on an unthinkable journey over the last four seasons, winning a third cup from six finals on Wednesday nights trip to Alfreton, alongside two league titles & promotions and countless other unforgettable memories. Speaking on the agreement, Cleggy commented: “I’m delighted to commit to my hometown club. I feel the momentum we have now is something I couldn’t contemplate walking away from. The fans on Wednesday were terrific, and that sealed it for me. The aim now is simple. It’s to progress each year, and to keep raising our profile. The current squad are as good as anything I’ve seen, they are a great bunch. They keep you on your toes, but they are all a pleasure to be around! It makes me extremely proud to be the man chosen to keep the club moving forward.” Michael was appointed in the summer of 2014, and begun his reign with a double of the North West Counties First Division and Bolton Hospital Cup in his first season, complemented by also reaching the NWCFL League Cup and NWCFL First Division Cup finals against Glossop and AFC Darwen respectively. Starting how he meant to go on, the following season saw the Colls climb immediately to third in the Premier Division, alongside an unforgettable 5-1 league cup win over league winners Colne in Fleetwood. Following up on this success, last season saw Michael lead the Colls to comprehensively winning the Premier Division title with 100 points, and an unforgettable FA Vase run taking the Black and Whites to the final sixteen, just 225 minutes from Wembley. In our first season at this level of football, the success has continued, with Michael Clegg’s men winning their fifth competition in four seasons on Wednesday night against Coalville Town in the NPL League Cup, alongside an outstanding 10th place finish, losing only twice in the final few months of the season. With Cleggy on board for another two seasons, attention now turns to preparations for the 2018-19 EvoStik First Division West campaign, and our defence of the Integro Cup. Details about friendlies, transfers and our brand new supporters initiatives are to be released in due course. Photo with gratitude to Jerry @TheOnionBag1. Article by Rob Clarke.
