Atherton Collieries look forward to making the journey across to old rivals Glossop North End tomorrow. This encounter will mark the penultimate game of the 21/22 pre-season campaign. The last meeting between the two sides came on the 22nd December 2018. North End took the initial lead just seven minutes into the game, Dominic Marie’s goal silencing the Skuna Stadium. However, goals from Ben Hardcastle and Ian Rowlands ensured the three points for the black and whites that afternoon.
Brad Cooke’s men have enjoyed a competitive pre-season campaign thus far. Whilst Atherton have yet to register a win, they have competed incredibly well in games against Bacup Borough (a Colls Trialist XI), Annan Athletic, Salford City, Bolton Wanderers and City of Liverpool.
Speaking of the fixture, Cooke said: ‘This will be another tough game, this is why we built the schedule that we did. We played professional teams where we knew we would have less of the ball and work on our defensive shape, we have got through that now. Now we’re playing sides like Glossop, they’re like league games. There’s not much difference between the sides in the division below and our division. Really looking forward to this game, we just need to work ourselves towards the 14th August.’.
