Tomorrow we welcome Mickleover Sports to Atherton for the first time ever. Mickleover will become the third team from Derbyshire to face Colls, following the more local Glossop and New Mills, the country straddling the Peak District and our visitors being just West of Derby.
It would be fair to say that the Sports’ best form has been at home, although a 1-0 loss away at Warrington Town to a Matty Chadwick penalty suggests we are in for a very tight game.
A couple of familiar faces in the opposition squad are veteran striker Lee Hughes who bagged regularly for his boyhood team West Bromwich Albion in the late 90s before securing a £5,000,001 move to Coventry City in 2001. More recently he has still been a regular scorer in non-league for Worcester City and Telford United. The archetypal goal poacher! He is joined by former Preston North End, Burton Albion and Coventry City striker Stuart Beavon who joined on loan from Nuneaton Borough.
For Colls, it’s a slightly stretch squad with injuries and suspensions taking their toll, Ben Hardcastle, Ben Conway and Ian Rowlands are still feeling the effects of knocks, but are expected to return for Tuesday’s trip to Matlock Town. Also returning on Tuesday are Keiran Nolan and Dave Sherlock following suspensions.
Returns are on the cards in the medium term for Danny Lambery and Kieran Nolan, whilst Matt Grimshaw and Glenn Matthews have no set return dates.
Following the game we’ll be doing a presentation to Jordan Cover mark his 200 games for the club, before he heads off to a gig!
