Atherton Collieries can confirm the loan signing of Owen Mooney from Wigan Athletic. The 18-year old goalkeeper has already gained Northern Premier League experience with 25 appearances for Newcastle Town as well as 13 for Runcorn Linnets, and has made 14 appearances for the Latics' under 21s side this season.
Mooney has been a key player in a successful young cohort for the Latics, lifting the 2019-20 Professional Development League North league title and subsequently the National Championship in his first campaign, before signing his first professional contract this pre-season.
The stopper has also gained a reputation for saving penalties during his time with Newcastle Town, and also reached the Northern Premier League Division One play-off final with Runcorn Linnets last campaign.
Owen joins on a temporary loan deal, providing cover whilst Nico Defreitas-Hansen recovers from a minor injury. We thank Wigan Athletic for their co-operation in agreeing this deal. We would like to sponsor MPD Built Environment Solutions for their sponsorship of Owen Mooney.
