Colls suffered an opening-day NPL defeat for the third consecutive season as Runcorn Linnets deservedly claimed victory at the Dreams2Reality Stadium.
That said, a couple of key decisions going the other way could easily have produced a different outcome.
Linnets started brightly, their hard-working display reflecting the trademark style of their manager, Colls legend Brad Cooke. A single first-half goal was scant reward for their dominance. Former Colls man Scott Bakkor was quickest to react after a shot rattled the crossbar, slotting home — though there were more than a few murmurs about possible offside.
Manager Michael Clegg was far from happy with his side’s first-half showing, but Colls came out with far more fire after the break. Kielen Adams’ acrobatic effort was denied by keeper Bayleigh Passant, who later foiled Aaron Dwyer in a one-on-one. Danny Lafferty thought he had levelled from a corner, but celebrations were quickly cut short by the assistant referee’s flag — a decision that became the main talking point after the match.
Despite Colls’ second-half pressure, Linnets weathered the storm and finished strongly, sealing the points in the closing moments. After sustained pressure, Adam Moseley struck to send the travelling fans home happy.
Clegg was disappointed with both the performance and result, but as an experienced campaigner, he remains confident that his new-look side will soon find their rhythm.
Colls travel to Stalybridge Celtic on Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off) before turning their attention to the Emirates FA Cup at the D2R Stadium next Friday, when Prestwich Heys are the visitors (7.45pm kick-off).
