After playing in both the FA Cup and Vase for the past three games the NWCFL returned on Saturday in the form of an away trip to Chadderton FC. The game started slowly with both sides having an equal amount of possession; however it was the Collieries who registered the first shot on goal eight minutes into the game. Mark Truffas collected the ball and ran through to the edge of the box, running along the edge of the box instead of shooting Truffas passed the ball across to Matty Boland on the right wing. Boland shoots but sees his shot fly wide of the mark. The Collieries found themselves with a free kick in a very healthy position ten minutes later. Mark Truffas whipped the free kick in for Boland to head home, a superb free kick and a good strong header from Boland. Minutes later it could have been two. Jake Kenny, finding himself in an attacking position on the right wing, crossed in for Boland to again direct his header at the Chadderton goal. However, this time Chadderton goalkeeper Dale Latham saved well. As the half went on Chadderton grew into the game more and more, hitting the bar on twenty nine minutes. Chadderton captain Matthew Russell received the ball on the edge of the D and after taking a touch thundered his shot against the bar. With only five minutes of the half remaining the Collieries continued to look to double their advantage. Mark Battersby received the ball after Kenny knocked the long ball up for Boland to head on to Battersby, however, his shot was straight at Latham. Half Time – Chadderton 0-1 Atherton Collieries A minute into the second half and Battersby was at it again as the Collieries looked to make it two. After a Collieries passing move Battersby hit his shot from just outside the area but again Latham was equal to it and saved well. When the Collieries did make it two, that man Battersby was involved again, collecting the ball in the Chadderton half before he passed it onto Kristian Holt on the edge of the D. Holt took a touch before shooting and eventually scoring. Sixty seven minutes into the game following a great Collieries move between Battersby and Collieries debutant of the bench Wesley Bancroft, Battersby volleyed just over the bar. With the game having only eight minutes remaining the Collieries made it three. A positive attacking ball was hit forward from the defence for Bancroft on the half way line to follow and run onto. Collecting the ball, Bancroft continued his run into the Chadderton area, Bancroft then curled his shot around Latham to score a goal on his Collieries debut. Full Time – Chadderton 0-3 Atherton Collieries Another pleasing Collieries performance which sees us remain unbeaten so far this season, keeping four clean sheets in a row in the league.
