Squad Update: 15th March 2023

Atherton Collieries can confirm the registration of youth section proteges Ben Layton and Liam Sheppard to the first team squad, ahead of tomorrow’s huge clash with FC United of Manchester.

Playing alongside Bobby Fenlon, who was named in Tuesday night’s squad at Bamber Bridge, Ben and Liam have played a part in an exceptional Colls under 17’s outfit in the North West Youth Alliance so far this campaign. Both players have also previously played in the youth ranks of Accrington Stanley.

Midfielder Ben has made thirteen appearances so far this year, and is a creative box-to-box midfielder with solid technical ability. Liam recently celebrated passing an exceptional 50-goal milestone for the club, currently tallying 53 goals from 37 games across all competitions since joining in June. Liam has already played alongside the first team in a recent 3-0 friendly win against Widnes.

Over the last five years, the Colls Youth Section have recorded two North West Junior Premier League titles and a national JPL final, alongside a further semi-final and two quarter-final appearances. We are proud of the success of all involved and we would like to again congratulate Bobby, Ben and Liam for earning their experience with the first team.

Atherton Collieries would also like to wish the best of luck to forward Nathan Caine, who has joined Lewis Coulton on a short-term loan at Widnes in the NPL First Division.
